Uno Prii
In 2019 William Eakin, Leala Hewak and Craig Rodmore installed UNO PRII at VEMU, Toronto’s Estonian Canadian Museum and Archives. This series explores the Estonian-born architects.
Uno Prii designed almost 200 buildings which straddle the Modernist and Brutalist movements. His rent-controlled apartments still house students and middle-class families, but the imaginative, whimsical structures are often attacked as ugly ducklings. UNO PRII is more tone poem than architectural documentation – dark, abstract and formless, bright, glitched and symmetric, the images reflect the ethos of these buildings.
