Jewish artists in Canada turned inward in 2024—to bring bolder identities into 2025
Toronto-based conceptual photographer Leala Hewak is currently touring her ambitious international portrait project, “The J-Word.” This evocative body of work investigates Jewish identity, belonging, and otherness through anonymous portraiture. Hewak’s method involves engaging Jewish participants globally in candid dialogues, resulting in striking portraits that explore universal themes of inclusion and alienation.
Hewak’s artistic practice is deeply shaped by her previous career as a defense counsel, where she developed a profound commitment to themes of access and social justice. Early in her legal journey, she apprenticed with the esteemed social rights lawyer Clayton Ruby and later served as duty counsel for Ontario Legal Aid. Over five years, she represented low-income clients in approximately 3,000 bail hearings, honing her ability to quickly understand individuals and their stories. These experiences instilled a fearless and empathetic approach, which now defines her photography.
“The J-Word” uniquely emphasizes anonymity to foster openness, with subjects’ identities remaining undisclosed, reinforcing the conceptual strength and universality of the project.
