Small House
In 2020, I photographed an abandoned 1960s home which had belonged to a reform Rabbi. The psychedelically lush period décor embodied the hopes of his family and existed for me as a palace of living dreams. I returned five times while contents were gradually removed. Original modernist interiors are rare, often facing alteration beyond recognition if not complete demolition. These homes represent the last, most personal refuges of mid-century ideals: optimism, permissiveness, democracy, and hope. If they are not recorded, they cease to exist.
Selections from this series were exhibited in September 2022 at Gallery 44 in Toronto.
