Motel
An aimless summer drive through Scarborough in 2021 instigated a study of one of Toronto’s last vestiges of affordable lodging. “The Royal” and “Avon” motels, slated for imminent demolition, provided opportunity and motive. My partner Don Hewak acted as security, muse, and model. I returned three times and the caretaker/manager not only granted me access to photograph rooms but also shared his own archive of snapshots with me. He has asked to remain unnamed and uncredited. This anonymous collaboration is dedicated to him.
